Update on March 1st, 2016: I have since changed my opinion, and would like to state my official opinion is that Jurassic Park is better than The Lost World, but that I still enjoy them the same. However I will leave the topic as it is for those still interested in reading and discussing.

Okay I have briefly said it before but this time I wanted to make a full topic adressing this. I generally enjoy The Lost World: Jurassic Park more than it's predecesor, Jurassic Park.

Now I have seen extremely few people who agree with me on this. Only people I've seen agree with me so far is Sci-FiKing-25 and some random reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes. (It's a popular review site for those of you who don't know.)

Well anyway- why do I enjoy The Lost World more? I am going to list some of the many reasons below, I hope mayeb some of you might agree with me!

1- The Lost World had a darker atmosphere

One of the reasons I enjoyed the Lost World more is the fact that it had a much darker atmosphere. As most everyone knows Jurassic Park was adapted so kids could enjoy the film as well. (If it showed the deaths more it would easily have been R-rated rather than PG-13). The film is not soley for kids, it was just made for the whole family to watch.

And they did well on that, when I watched it as a kid I wasn't at all scared of it along with everyone else I know.

Then there is The Lost World... One of the reasons I enjoyed it more is that it didn't necessarily fully leave the more "gentle" atmosphere Jurassic Park had, this time, it was much darker and straightforward. As a kid some parts spooked me out.

I also liked how we got to see the dirty little secrets behind Jurassic Park. Sure it didn't go into the direction the book did but it was still cool to see the dark secrets of InGen.

2- Had characters I liked more

In the Lost World there were much more characters that I enjoyed more than the first one. First off Ian Malcolm is now the star of the show, which made me happy since he is my favorite character. Then there is Sarah Harding, and she is a very good character and actor. The character she played was awesome! We also got Nick, which I liked. Then we have a new Safari Hunter in place fo Muldoon, whose name was Roland Tembo. And although he was the villain, I liked the acting of Peter Ludlow. (The ACTING, not the character.)

3- Cooler and Nastier Dinosaur Deaths

I thought the death scenes in The Lost World were far more btter and captivating than the first film. I mean come on, an angry Mommy and Daddy T-Rex attacking the trailer because they want their little child! A rampage of compies brutally killing a pshycopath(Ouch)! Raptors storlling through tall grass killing everyone standing in And Then There Were None style! And then angry Daddy Rex going apeshit all over San Diego!!! Also the scene where

Do you get my point, people!!!???

Well anyway those are the main reasons of why I enjoy The Lost World over Jurassic Park.

Please do leave a reply! I love to hear your thoughts whether it be to agree or to disagree! But please let's do this in a clam manner; this is just a discussion over which movie you think is better. This is just my opinion.

I also enjoy TLW better because-

1. More action

2. A wider variety of dinosaurs

3. Tyrannosaurus in San Diego

(I also agree with what's stated in the topic.)

Ah yes, forgot about that! It had much more action and did include more dinosaurs than the first one.

I like them the same amount. FYI, I found Jurassic Park very scary. And Spielberg didn't make it fmaily-friendly, he toned down the violence from the book. However, I love them both equally too much to even represent in words

Well it was made family-friendly- allt he deaths are censored. It is for adults but it was made for kid- I mean even the music! The music is somehting that certainly appeals to kids as well. Also the tone as well.

You call a man being shaken so hard by a Rex that you can hear his back dislocating family-friendly? Or a dislocated arm falling on someone? Or a man's skull being ripped to shreds while a raptor pounces on him? We have very different "family friendly" values.

They were all censored out... And yes they did leave you eery but not scared to death.

Why are you getting offended? Whether you like it or not, it was made so kids could enjoy ALONG with adults. I am not saying it's for kids. How do you think so many people grew up with the movie? They watched as kids...

I mean I could say Tom and Jerry isn't for kids if I find enough violent stuff int hat show. And Looney Tunes.

I'm not offended, just debating. :) It's my nature. Jurassic Park is much darker than Tom and Jerry, not sure why you brought that up. Haha. But KIDS to me is like 3-8. Which is very scary for most of that age group. Sure, older isn't as scary. Still eerie. (I think its scary.)

Oh, okay, it did seem like you were getting a bit upset there.

I brought Tom and Jerry up as an example that I could prove anything is not for kids by phrasing thins a certain way, know what I mean?

And yes, it does appeal to somewhat that age group. The music, the tone, the atmosphere, know what I mean? To be honest you're the first I met to say you found it scary as a child.

FERNANDOSAURUS REX - I felt that The Lost World was an exceptionally neat film! I did not enjoy it quite as much as Jurassic Park; however, I felt that it was very neat and well-presented! I agree with the many points you've touched upon while extolling your preferred movie! :)

I think Speilburg was striving more for an "Aliens" Moral, Which he certainly got.

What do I mean by that?

What can go wrong, Will go wrong.

The hunters, Will become the hunted. Those in Control, Will loose it.

I enjoyed TLW About the same as JP. I'd like to see some more TLW Concept.

(Or speilburg Direct these things again, Because he seems to know what the hell the franchise is about)

@Something Real- Thanks for liking my points!

@Paden- That was more of Crichton's way, what can go wrong will go wrong. I read oen of his other books and he really stresses that philosophy out, it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of WHEN.

And yes, he really is the only one who knows the true heart of the franchise.

@401

See, YOu get it.

That's why the franchise has been slowing.

Most of these Directors haven't been there since the start. They weren't there drafting the first Script with Crichton.

Yeah, they were never among with Crichton. That's wrong with the 3rd one. it annoys me when people say the 3rd sucked because Spino beat Rex. It didn't suck, it was just dissapointing. And it wasn't created by the original storytellers of the franchise.

I would agree with you on most parts I do find JP2 more entertaining as well, for the exact reasons but on the contrary I like the human characters in JP1 better.

In my opinion i gave the first film 9/10 for originality,  top notch CGI  for its time, and character storyline development.

and the TLW 8/10 Not because its any worse but it was just down to inconsistances and plot holes, characters disaapearing ect thats all. Over all its still one of my favourite films and i highly rate it.

AND YOU DIDNT MENTION EDDIES DEATH SCENE!!!!!!!  gotta be the best one in the entire franchise> ( wish bone ) :D

thats my view. Great topic.

and regarding the scare factor. I was 6 years old back in 1993 when jurassic hit the theatres and i cacked my pants when i saw it, in fact hearing that t rex roar in a cinema at that age i shat my self lmao.

I dunno how old a lot of you are on here, but seeing them at the cinema is a different experience completely than on DVD. The impact and tention isnt the same. The closest ul get  to that fear is, being alone in ur house with every light off and a big tv in front of you, and turning the sound on.

I've said before that had TLW could've easily beat the first movie for me, had it not been for the plot holes and some not so interesting characters. (In terms of the books though I like TLW much more.)

I know for a fact, at least 8 other people who were terrified of Jurassic Park, and half still are. In fact, we watched it in my HIGH SCHOOL film studies class and over 3/4 of the class hadn't seen it (I know, what has this world come to?) But, almost all the girls and a couple of the guys found it scary. You are right, that TLW is scarier and darker than the first JP. However, JP is still a scary movie. Although, the beginning sequence (with the intro, brachiosaur, front gate, etc.) is WAY more appropriate for younger viewers, the escape and death sequences are most certainly not.

I like Jurassic Park way more than the Lost World but I still really enjoy TLW and I think it gets too much hate from some people.

Thanks everyone for replying but still, Jurassic Park is made so kids can enjoy, honestly, like it or not. The general tone, the music, the deaths somewhat censored, classical scenes that make kids go crazy such as the brachiasaur and John Hammond saying "Welcome to... Jurassi Park."

Now I'm not saying it's for kids, it was just made so kids could also enjoy it.

Why do you think people always are talking about how Jurassic Park was part of their Childhood? Seriosuly, just watch the movie and notice the overall tone- friendly and heartwarming.

I think a better word is adolescents. My 5 year old sister and 7 year old brother sent allowed to watch Jurassic park until they're ten. You are making it sound like too much of a kid's movie. Walking with Dinosaurs (although I still enjoyed it) was a kid's movie. Jurassic Park is a movie for OLDER kids. I agree however, that TLW was much darker and "scarier." As for me being scared by it as a kid. I watched it wayyyyy too young, lol. I was 6 and it was on TV. I had nightmares for a month about Rexes and Raptors, haha.

No, it really is made so kids can enjoy it. How am I making Jurassic Park sound too much like a kids movie? it is what it is.

It's like when people get mad whenever I say The Hobbit (Book version) is a kid's book (because it is, the style, the story, genre, etc.) is for children.

Jurassic Park is different, it's made for the whole family. For kids, adolescents, adults, eldery, whatever. It is what it is. Again, seriosuly, the TONE Of the movie-

None of you guys have siad anything about that- it's just the general tone of the movie that gives the impression it somewhat caters towards kids. And the music aswell. A lot of the classic scenes aswell.

This site recommends the age appropriacy to parents and viewers. It takes the average of TONS of reviews and let's people make an informed decision. This is the page for Jurassic Park. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/jurassic-park. It lists the age range average as 9 to 12. That, my friend, is adolescents. I think you have become numbed to thw overall effect of the movie through watching it so many times. (As just about everyone on this site has.) Maybe if you watched it for the first time ever NOW. Your thoughts would be different.

Try to imagine yourself in the Cretaceous Period..... Haha

First off 9-12 year olds aren't adolescents, they're children.

And the site doesn't matter. Seriosuly, the Neverending Story and Shrek scared me more than Jurassic Park., put that into perspective. Does that mean those movies are meant for adolescents? no. Does it matter Jurassic Park is made for kids to enjoy? No.

Again, it's just the tone of the movie.

No need to get offended. I'm stating my own opinion that Jurassic Park is an "older kid'sbro adult" movie. Not sure why you are getting so upset. If you believe Jurassic Park is a kid's movie, so be it. I was simply saying that because of the you know... Mutilation and death featured, I think it wasn't. I found the tone of the first half (as you said) more happy and magical even, but the last half's tone was dark and eerie.

I'm not getting upset, the movie is what it is, honestly. The whole tone of it, even the "scary" part. With death and (censored) mutilation does not mean adult.

I mean I've played E-rated video games that have people die in front of you, a man cough a lot of blood a couple of times, fight monsters covered in red blood, and much more and the game is designed so kids can enjoy it.

I don't think there's a noticable difference between the movies in terms of targeted audience. I mean the deaths in the last world besides Eddie were offscreen with you only seeing some blood or screaming when it was over, nothing really different than from the original. The Lost World cme out when I was 5 and I remember going to see it in theaters and even at that age I didn't remember feeling any more fear than from the original. In fact I still think the opening scene in the original was much more scary and had more tension building than anything in The Lost World.

I don't think The Lost World is a bad movie, but I wouldn't put it on the same level as the original.

MemberAllosaurusDec-17-2014 3:33 PM

I mean The Land Before Time is pretty violent for a kids movie. The movie was also directed by Steven Spielberg so it would make sense for him to adapt Jurassic Park so it can be enjoyable for kids.

^I watched that movie when I was around 8. Needless to say, it was a bit too deep and emotional rather than scary for a kid's movie.

However, many can still view it as a more mature film, for more mature audiences. This is a matter of opinions and ethics really. I honestlky think it is a great, at times thrilling, even frightening film.
