Take this 'gene-splicing' concept. Instead of viewing this as a recipe for creating an entirely new 'tentacled-poisonous dinosaur', try to see it as a way of filling the sequence gaps from the original dinosaur DNA they are trying to clone. Much like how, in the first movie, frog DNA was used to 'fill in the gaps?' Perhaps, this is how they are doing it to this particular dinosaur, recycling older 'versions' and upgrading it with more 'recent' DNA (remember how the Ceratosaurus from JP III is morphologically more similiar to T.rex?). From the words of Colin Trevorrow:
"We were hoping audiences could discover this on their own, but yes, there will be one new dinosaur created by the park’s geneticists. The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA. This creation exists to fulfill a corporate mandate—they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that’s what they get.
I know the idea of a modified dinosaur put a lot of fans on red alert, and I understand it. But we aren’t doing anything here that Crichton didn’t suggest in his novels. This animal is not a mutant freak. It doesn’t have a snake’s head or octopus tentacles. It’s a dinosaur, created in the same way the others were, but now the genetics have gone to the next level. For me, it’s a natural evolution of the technology introduced in the first film. Maybe it sounds crazy, but most of my favorite movies sound crazy when you describe them in a single sentence."
And I have a feeling that that this 'one new dinosaur' is Carnotaurus.
Cuttlefish have a way to blend in their environment more effectively than chameleons. And we hardcore fans all know that Crichton's Carnotaurus' in The Lost World did it flawlessly (and god, it was suspenseful). Then there's its name 'Diabolus or Diablo Rex'. We all know that Carnotaurus had horns, and so did the devil (at least in most modern depictions.) Notice that the name 'Diablo' is Spanish for 'Devil', and the Costa Ricans speak Spanish (assuming that you all know this is going to be set in the Costa Rican island Isla Nublar, recently leased, again, to a mega-corporation?) And the first 'Carnotaurus' toy from the Jurassic Park series has the nickname 'Demon' printed beside (or under) the name 'Carnotaurus'? Coincidence? I think not.
Discuss.
